chrome money

Google’s Chrome Browser is quite the success story. It’s racked up a ten percent market share in just two years. However, the market share is comprised of mostly personal consumers, and not business users. Google has begun to try to change all of that. It has introduced tools to help enterprises roll out Chrome to their employees.

Google has introduced an MSI Installer and Group Policy policies and templates for Chrome and related tools. These technologies are irrelevant to consumers, but are standard in big IT departments managing lots of Windows PCs.
This is all part of Google’s continued push to oust Microsoft as big dog re: all things office-based.

CIOs who are planning to move pre-existing software assets into that mythic cloud should ease a bit of their licensing arrangement worries by leveraging credits and other transfer services. This will minimize the impact, says one of the lead designers of Microsoft Azure.

Gianpaolo Carraro, director of developer and platform evangelism at Microsoft Australia, spent five years at Microsoft head office in Redmond designing the Azure cloud platform.

“The licensing models are different from the Azure and public brands and we are expecting enterprises to adopt both as you can expand current needs with online offerings,” he said.

“One company kept its Exchange server for corporate staff and created new mailboxes in the cloud for new staff and contractors.”

n the case of Exchange, Carraro said, customers can get credits for CALs (client access licences) when moving from on-premise assets to cloud services.

“For some companies the cloud opens up a new set of opportunities,” he said. “The lower hanging fruit is cost savings, but the move to the cloud in the long run will be about innovation.”

google apps

Google continues it’s high-speed chase after Exchange customers with the imminent release of their Gmail-based backup plan for business users of Exchange Server.

Google Message Continuity, developed and provided by the Postini division, replicates all e-mail activity on the customers’ Exchange servers with cloud-based Gmail.

This means that when your Exchange host goes down for maintenance or what have you, you can still access your emails and documents via this cloud platform. Cool, to be sure. Google promises it will be easy to switch information back and forth within the cloud with little or no input repitition necessary.

Google Message Continuity costs US$25 per user, per year, for new customers and $13 per user, per year, for existing Postini customers.

Currently, the service works with Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007. Google is looking at adding Exchange 2010 in a future release.

microsoft patch

Microsoft has released another monthly security update. The security update addresses 40 vulnerabilities across 17 bulletins in Microsoft Windows, Office, and Internet Explorer, along with server-based systems like SharePoint Server and Exchange.

This massive December update comes after a relatively tame November, which saw the release only three major updates.

storsimple

StorSimple unveiled a line of cloud storage appliances that are optimized for Microsoft applications, file servers, and virtual machine libraries, the company said Dec. 6.

The appliances are deployed on premises within the data center and stores data locally on SSDs and in the cloud to offer hybrid storage while maintaining or improving performance, the company said.

Companies need to “think like Bing and Google search algorithms” and not treat all content the same, but weigh each piece differently so that the most important content is accessible first, said Ursheet Parikh, CEO of StorSimple.

The line of products is optimized specifically for SharePoint, Exchange, Windows Server 2008, and File Services, said Holmes. The appliances also support cloud storage providers such as Amazon, AT&T, EMC, Iron Mountain, and Microsoft Azure, according to Holmes

Microsoft has issued a guide for setting up a lab testing environment for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1. The 21-page document, “Exchange Server 2010 With Service Pack 1 Test Lab Guide,” is designed for architects, system administrators and system engineers. Microsoft announced the guide’s availability recently on a blog post. It can be downloaded here. It’s in Word only, so be sure to have a reliable Word reader.

The blog explains that this test lab guide describes steps to take for setting up a “base configuration” lab environment for Exchange 2010 SP1. IT pros can build other test labs on top of the base configuration if Microsoft’s test lab guides are used in setting them up, according to a Microsoft TechNet Wiki article.

Hewlett-Packard has dropped plans to offer Microsoft’s next version of Windows Home Server OS, code-named Vail, in its products, after retiring a line of servers carrying the current version of the OS, Microsoft said on Tuesday.

Microsoft said in a blog entry that HP’s decision to not support the upcoming Windows Home Server OS is tied to its decision of retiring MediaSmart Server products, which run the current version of Windows Home Server.

“As such, HP has told us they do not plan to provide a platform for Windows Home Server code name ‘Vail’. HP has told us they will continue to sell the existing version of MediaSmart Server through the end of the calendar year 2010 and will honor service and support agreements,” Microsoft wrote on the Windows Team Blog.

Vail is due out Fall of 2011.

The U.S. General Services Administration Dec. 1 said it picked Google Apps to replace IBM Lotus Notes as its provider of e-mail and collaboration software for its 17,000 full-time employees and contractors.

The GSA said it will pay $6.7 million to IT service provider Unisys Corp, which has partnered with Google, Tempus Nova, and Acumen Solutions, for the 5-year deal.

Microsoft Senior Director of SharePoint Tom Rizzo conceded Google’s win in a blog post Dec. 1.

“While we are disappointed we will not have the opportunity to meet the GSA’s internal messaging needs, we will continue to serve its productivity needs through the familiar experience of Microsoft Office and we look forward to understanding more about GSA’s selection criteria - especially around security and architecture,” said Rizzo.
