Florida companies can take advantage of “Digital Disaster Protection” for email

GULF BREEZE, FL, June 2, 2008 – AppRiver, a leader in managed email security and messaging collaboration services, today announced that it has partnered with Florida Chamber of Commerce to help businesses in the state avoid the loss of critical email messages because of hurricanes or other natural disasters. This is the fourth consecutive year that AppRiver and the Chamber have teamed up to offer this service in conjunction with the arrival of hurricane season.

Since it first became available in 2005, the “Digital Disaster Preparedness” program has become an essential item on many companies’ disaster preparation checklist. “The Digital Disaster program allows businesses in harm’s way to quickly reroute their inbound messages to AppRiver servers where they will be securely held. Once the danger passes, or communications are restored, all held messages can be released and delivered to the corporate mail servers,” said Blake Gehres, Chief Technology Officer for the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

Registrations is very simple, it lakes less than 10 minutes, and once completed will enable AppRiver to monitor a company’s email server activity. If the receiving server is affected by a hurricane, AppRiver will begin queuing the business’ incoming email messages in one of its own securely located data centers until that company’s email servers are up and running again. Additionally, the company can also request for its email to be redirected elsewhere or made available online, so the business can remain functional during the storm and the post-storm recovery period.

According to CEO Michael Murdoch, AppRiver’s own experience during Hurricane Ivan was a key reason why the company developed the program.

“When a hurricane is headed your way, there are a lot of things business owners need to worry about” said Murdoch. “Our goal is to let them quickly and effectively protect their email – and still have time to take care of their families and employees.”

To access the free service, businesses need only visit the Florida Chamber web site (www.floridachamber.com) or the AppRiver web site (www.appriver.com) and click the button marked “Digital Disaster Preparedness.” Users will be guided through a simple process from that point or they can call AppRiver at 1-866-223-4645.

‘Phishers’ Looking for More than Love, Warns Email Security Firm AppRiver

GULF BREEZE, FL, January 24, 2008 – AppRiver LLC (www.appriver.com), one of America’s largest email security providers, warns that some new electronic greeting cards bearing Valentine’s Day messages are once again being used to infect computers with viruses that can turn them into spam-sending ‘bots’ or to steal users’ personal information. Company analysts report that the volume of such malicious traffic is rising dramatically as Valentine’s Day approaches.

“Valentine’s Day is a prime time to spread a computer virus because so many people are flattered to receive unexpected cards and greetings,” said Joel Smith, AppRiver’s chief technical officer and co-founder. “Be aware that many of the senders are after your bank account or your hard drive rather than your heart. If you’re not careful, they’ll break all three.”

So far, AppRiver has seen two basic types of scams associated with the bogus Valentine’s cards. One is the so-called “Storm” worm that first surfaced last year. The worm takes over the computer and makes it part of a “bot-net,” capable of sending out thousands of spam messages without the user ever noticing. The second type of malicious content is a “Trojan” that can be used to record the keystrokes of its victims, potentially giving access to passwords and other important information.

According to Fred Touchette, AppRiver’s senior security analyst, the viruses travel as a link, rather than within the email itself. That feature makes it difficult for anti-virus programs to screen the email. The recipient is instructed to click the link and receive his or her Valentine’s greeting, often from a secret admirer or a person identified by only a first name.

Touchette said that “because this email looks so credible, we expect the infection rate to be very high, perhaps in the millions of systems. It is important that people understand this virus is out there and be careful opening emails from unknown senders.” He added that most legitimate e-greeting card sites and companies will require a first and last name, and offer other ways to ensure that the message is genuine.

“The bottom line is this: When in doubt, throw it out.” Touchette said.

AppRiver Offers Online Safety Tips for Consumers

GULF BREEZE, FL, November 15, 2007 – As traditional retailers are stocking their shelves for the holidays, cyber criminals are gearing up to spread something other than holiday cheer. This holiday season, consumers can expect an unprecedented wave of spam, viruses and phishing scams, according to AppRiver, a leading provider of managed email security solutions.

In recent years, AppRiver has seen a 35% increase in the overall volume of online traffic during the holiday season, with spam making up 98.9% of all emails coming through its filters. Based on the record levels of spam already seen this year, the company is predicting a massive spike in cyber attacks beginning the day before Thanksgiving and lasting well into the New Year.

“Spammers thrive during the hectic holiday season because consumers are spending more time online and are more likely to let their guard down,” said Joel Smith, Chief Technology Officer at AppRiver. “This year we expect cybercriminals to become even more aggressive and creative with their tactics, which range from technically-advanced malware to socially-engineered phishing campaigns.”

To ensure a safe and secure holiday season, AppRiver recommends that consumers keep the following tips in mind:

–Fake Holiday E-Cards
These popular greeting cards are often replicated and used to transport malicious malware such as the Storm Worm virus, which infects the recipient’s computer and then uses it to control additional computers. Consumers can avoid falling prey to these attacks by discarding e-cards from senders they don’t recognize or by going to the official website of the greeting card provider, which typically will have instructions for safely retrieving a legitimate greeting.

–Credit Card Phishing
As holiday spending gets underway, consumers are likely to see an increase in emails supposedly from financial institutions, claiming missed credit card payments, unauthorized transactions or problems with the recipient’s account and containing a link to enter the correct financial data. Unsuspecting shoppers are also vulnerable to phishing campaigns that use replicas of legitimate e-commerce sites, such as eBay, Amazon and PayPal, to extract credit card numbers and account information. For secure online banking and shopping, always open a new browser and go directly to the retailer’s website rather than following a link, and never respond to emails or pop-up windows asking for financial information.

–Charity Scams
Cybercriminals often exploit the holiday spirit of giving with mass email campaigns claiming to be from charities, and this year is no exception. To ensure that donations go to a worthy recipient and not into spammers’ pockets, always go directly to a charity’s official website and thoroughly research the organization before providing personal information or making a donation.

–Social Networking Spam
Spammers and phishers are increasingly using social networking sites such as MySpace to target certain demographics with unsolicited advertisements or free gift offers. These messages often appear to come from an online friend and can range from mere annoyances to phishing scams designed to harvest email addresses or steal account logins and passwords. Individuals should use privacy settings to restrict who can access their information on these sites and should never click on a link posted by an unknown source.

–IRS Phishing Expeditions
While not specific to the holidays, AppRiver has seen a recent wave of fake IRS emails that claim the recipient overpaid his or her taxes and must click a link to enter bank information and receive the extra money. Another version complains of a lack of payment and comes with an attachment that, when opened, downloads a virus designed to collect personal information from the user’s computer. As with any other legitimate institution, the IRS will never send important information by email; when in doubt, contact the agency directly by phone.
